For a number of years, research has been undergone to determine the effects some foods have on our diet. Experts are now saying certain foods can now help eliminate ailments such as heart disease, cancer, cholesterol and many more.

1. Almonds

There tiny little nuts are jam packed with goodness. They hold fiber, riboflavin, magnesium, iron, calcium and countless amounts of vitamin E. Almonds carry more calcium than most nuts and are a useful source of protein making them one of the most nutrient dense nuts out of all the nuts.

2. Avocados

The avocado is one of the richest source of healthy fat whilst still remaining a wholesome, plant-based substance. Due to our nation becoming obsessed with low-fat and no-fat diets, these fruits give the body a healthy dose of monounsaturated fat. These fats also enable the body to absorb fat-soluble vitamins like A, E and K which are essential for body function.

3. Blueberries

Huge amounts of research have been done on these little fellows and have been show to prevent some illnesses like heart disease and some cancers. They have been found to be rich in phytonutrients (compounds found in plants), vitamin C and fiber.

4. Salmon

Salmon is one of the richest sources of omega-3 fatty acids which is so important for overall health. It has anti-inflammatory properties which is so important for reducing inflammation in the arteries. The body cannot make this fatty acid so it is essential to get this through your diet... like eating salmon!

5. Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes, although a starchy vegetable, have a lower GI than a normal potato and are higher in nutrients. Having a low GI means that it creates a steady rise in blood sugar meaning more energy. Its colour also means it contains beta carotene (antioxidant) which is converted into vitamin A. This in turn slows down the aging process and can reduce the risk of some cancer.
