Banksman/Slinger Safety Awareness

Banksman/Slinger Safety Awareness

Aims

To impart the necessary knowledge and skills required for the operative to safely sling and then bank a crane during a lifting operation.

Objectives

By actively participating in the course delegates will be able to:

- Understand the requirements for the relevant legislation.
- Establish the physical properties of loads and communicate this information to the crane driver.
- Select appropriate lifting tackle, also how to attach and detach it correctly and safely.
- Direct the actions of a crane moving loads of various weights and dimensions, giving clear and ambiguous signals and in such a manner as to ensure the safety of personnel and plant, determine the serviceability of lifting tackle, maintain and store it correctly.

By actively participating in the course delegates should have an adequate knowledge of:

- The duties and responsibilities of a Slinger and Banksman.
- The effects of load movement on the stability of a crane.
- Potential hazards associated with crane operation and how to overcome them.
- The effect of varying the angles of multi-leg slings and how to calculate their safe working loads.
- Methods of establishing weights, centre of gravity and dimensions of loads.
- The standard code of signals.
- The factors to consider when planning a lift.
- The safe use of specific items of lifting equipment
