Aims
To give company personnel the opportunity to practice locating / identifying underground services that pose a potential hazard, and how cable avoidance tools would be necessary to avoid danger.
Objectives
By actively participating in this course delegates will be able to:
- Understand the main aims of the Health and Safety at Work Act , Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations and the Construction (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1996, HSG 185 (Health and Safety in Excavations), as they relate to excavations and underground services.
- Understand the hazards associated with underground services.
- Be familiar with the various principles of operation of cable avoidance tools and also their limitations.
- Understand the necessity for planning underground services surveys.
- Know the correct survey methods and the appropriate marking methods.
- Know what safe digging practices are and how to implement them. - Understand the need for the appropriate emergency procedures.

- Safe working procedures when working near underground services
- The theory of underground service locating, including cat & genny and safe digging practices
- Practical locating exercises using cable avoidance tools and accessories, giving due regard to health and safety
- Questions and answers & post course questionnaire
