Texting While Driving - Public Service Announcement

Occasionally you hear a story, watch the media clip and wonder why no one has created this public service document previously

‘‘ Friday 4th September having listened to the interviews from the producer of the public service document and viewed the clip, I left Huddersfield after completing my meeting, it was a simple drive Huddersfield M62 – M6 – M5 – M4 – M32 and home, a slow journey of just over 210 miles on a Friday afternoon and I had no expectation of being home early, but over the following 4 hours I viewed cars, vans, lorries, buses, taxis and emergency service vehicles with the driver either using a mobile phone with one hand on the wheel or texting or reading texts or some even collecting their emails from their blackberry, I suppose I should expect this level of driving without due regard for the safety of others.

By the time I arrived in Manchester I started to wonder how many businesses had employees, driving along showing a total disregard for the safety of others, between Manchester and Birmingham I noticed over 200 drivers using their mobile phones, and at least 30 of those drivers where employees of ‘Blue Chip’ companies quoted on the London Stock Exchange, over 100 where driving company vehicles, with the company claiming to be achieving 100% safety compliance, except they appear to have forgotten their operatives out on the road, handling tonnes of potentially lethal machinery, especially when their concentration is diverted to other more pressing matters.

Occasionally someone produces a public information film that should form part of the mandatory safety for all drivers in the UK, last week this media clip became available, this week company directors need to accept their responsibilities and control and manage what happens in their company’s name.’’
